Conventional sources of energy have been depleting at an alarming rate, which makes future sustainable development of energy use very difficult. In addition, global warming or climate change caused by human activities and conventional energy system technologies has shown dramatic impact on all lives on the earth. Thus, the main aims of the Energy Systems Research Group are to improve the energy performance of existing systems in order to save the energy and reduce the size and cost of the systems and to develop new systems with less global warming impact. The research projects are both analytical and experimental studies on related topics such as thermal systems, renewable energy, transport phenomena, heat transfer enhancement, air-conditioning and refrigeration technologies, electronic cooling devices, solar heating and cooling, fire protection, drying and combustion.
The applied research topics include:

- Thermodynamic of combustion and gasification processes
- Vapour compression refrigeration systems and not-in-kind cooling technologies e.g. magnetic refrigeration systems
